History of golf
The history of golf
is somewhat ambiguous. It is known that Romans played a game
that was similar to golf and in the Middle Ages many European
countries had golf-like games. The Scottish were the first
to dig a hole in the ground and make the object of the game
to get the ball in the hole, and are therefore often referred
to as the inventors of golf.
In the history of golf there were no written rules until
the mid-18th Century. The 13 rules were written by the Honorable
Company of Edenburgh Golfers for the Annual Challenge for
the Edinburgh Silver Club. The rules of golf evolved over
time and in 1897 the Royal Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews
formed a Rules Committee.
Today golf is enjoyed by people from all walks of life;
however, the cost of equipment and course fees can be high.
Golf has been popularized by the advent of televised tournaments
and exciting players like Tiger Woods. There are a large number
of golf courses all over the country and many places in the
world.
The history of golf shows an ever evolving game. Golf is
a game that is easy to learn, but difficult to master. Golf
provides many with a great form of exercise, competition and
fun.
